This watch fob seal originally hung from a gentleman's watch chain. It is made from 9k gold and fitted with a carnelian seal which has been beautifully engraved with an intaglio depicting the Greek god Hermes, known by the Romans as Mercurius, who can be identified by the wing in his hair.

In Greek mythology, Hermes was a son of Zeus and functioned as the emissary and messenger of the gods. He could swiftly travel between the divine and mortal world and was also known for having a mischievous streak, often pranking both gods and humans.

Hermes was worshipped as the protector of human heralds, travelers, thieves, merchants, and orators. He was also considered a "soul guide", who would help souls navigate the afterlife.
